The ultimate guide to choosing the right type of windows for your home

by Glazing Hub 17 Mar 2023
How to choose a new window for your house
Windows are an essential part of any home. They let in natural light and provide ventilation. They not only improve the overall appearance of a home, but they also play an important role in energy efficiency.
On the other hand, choosing the right type of new windows can be challenging, especially if you are unfamiliar with the available options. The Glazing Hub team will walk you through everything you need to know to choose the best windows for your home.

Understand the Different Window Styles

Understanding the various window styles is critical when choosing the right windows for your home. Each style has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and selecting the right one will improve not only the aesthetics of your home but also its functionality and energy efficiency.

Casement Windows

As the most common type of window in the United Kingdom, casement windows are a great choice. They have a side hinge and swing outwards, making them simple to use and appropriate for most rooms in your home.

Sash windows

Another popular window style found in Georgian and Victorian homes are sash windows. These vertical sliding windows provide excellent ventilation and are energy-efficient, making them ideal for older homes.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are a popular option for living rooms and bedrooms. They protrude from the wall and provide a panoramic view of the outdoors. Bay windows are ideal for adding extra seating to your living room or creating a cosy reading nook. They also let in a lot of natural light, making your home feel more spacious and inviting.

Tilt and turn windows

These versatile windows can tilt inwards for ventilation or open like a door for easy cleaning and access. They are ideal for rooms that require a lot of ventilation, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Roof Windows

Roof windows are an excellent choice for attics and loft conversions. They are installed on the roof and allow natural light to enter your home, making it appear brighter and larger.

Determine the Energy Efficiency Rating

Energy-efficient windows can significantly reduce your energy bills by keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The energy rating of a window, which ranges from A++ to G, determines its energy efficiency. The higher the rating, the better the energy efficiency of the window. The Glazing Hub team has identified three steps you should follow before purchasing a window for your home.

Select the Right Frame Material

Window frames are made of a variety of materials, including uPVC, wood, and aluminium. When it comes to window and door frames, uPVC is widely preferred in the UK due to its low cost, low maintenance requirements, and high efficiency. Timber frames are visually appealing and ideal for older homes. They require more maintenance than uPVC frames, but with proper care, they can last for decades. Aluminium frames are strong and long-lasting but more expensive than uPVC and wood.

Take a look at the glazing

In the UK, double glazing is standard, but triple glazing is available for even greater energy efficiency. The space between the glass panes can also differ, with larger gaps providing better insulation. You can also select from various glass types, such as toughened glass for added security, self-cleaning glass, and noise-reducing glass.

Decide on Additional Features

When choosing new windows for your home, it's important to consider any additional features that you may want. Security features should be prioritised, so look for windows with secure locking mechanisms and toughened glass to improve the security of your home. If you want to add some decorative elements to your windows, you have several options, including leaded glass, Georgian bars, and stained glass. Consider trickle vent windows for improved ventilation and reduced condensation. Considering these extra features can help you find windows that meet all of your needs while also improving your home's overall look and feel.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
